Becoming more sustainable and contributing to a smaller footprint is important for every business. But, how do you get momentum in your work, and how can you turn a strategy into hands on actions and get result?
To take the next step in working with their sustainability strategy Graniten signed up for Eco Vadis– an international assessment provider- with a network that includes more than 75,000 companies. The result was a silver medal, which means top 25% in the packaging industry. A remarkable achievement.
Joakim Hinder, process developer and sustainability coordinator at Graniten, shares his tips on how to get the sustainability work going practically.
-“Sustainability for us at Graniten goes beyond making money to achieve long-term stability, includes taking good care of our employees, customers and the environment while showing transparency. These elements make up our sound strategy while identifying opportunities to expand sustainability efforts aligned with Agenda 2030 across Graniten’s global operations”
STEP 1. Connect the sustainability focus to your core company values
Working with sustainability is a never-ending job so it needs to be anchored within the organization. At Graniten we connect the sustainability focus to our core values which are passion and teamwork, partnership, continuous improvements, and innovation. The goal of increasing our sustainable performance originate from these values.
STEP 2. Create a clear working structure for your sustainability improvements
Graniten choose to disclose the company’s data to an international sustainability assessment methodology. A clear working structure is essential to keep the focus on the tasks ahead and involve the right competences to your team. Graniten chose Eco Vadis since it’s a network that uses the collected data to research different sustainability areas.
Step 3. Collect your data for continuous follow ups
The first big takeaway is to have your data ready for continuous collection and use it to gain insights and identify gaps and opportunities connected to sustainability performance. With the right data, improvements can be evaluated and followed up- a perfect way to visualize the steps that are taken and share with colleagues.
Step 4. Teamwork makes the dreamwork
The best initiatives are formed when several people come together to find a solution. Encourage different views and learn by listening, search for new ways to improve and be open to different ideas. This means focusing on solutions that create impact while enjoying the journey together with your colleagues. To reach success, all parts of the organisation must operate at a high professional level, while keeping process- and knowledge silos away.
Step 5. Don’t forget to celebrate
Rome was not built in a day, nor will a complete environmental, social and governance (ESG) programme be, therefore celebrate the small victories and the milestones, to keep the momentum going forward. Graniten received a silver medal (top 25% within our industry) in the assessment which is a receipt for the incredible work that signifies our collective sustainability knowledge, experience and skills embedded in our daily operations demonstrated by every employee within Graniten.
Joakim Hinder continuous.
